We've been watching this watermelon grow in our garden for quite a while, and decided it was finally time to pick it. We think it finally decided to grow (after being planted in early April!) was because I cut back the cucumbers which were monopolizing the nutrients.
It still may have been too soon for picking... or something. It was edible but didn't exactly have much flavor. Our tomatoes also decided to come out in full force, but doubt they will have time to really ripen well due to the chilly weather that has come. Oh well - maybe next year.

Our tomatoes struggled as well. We only have had a few ripen in just the last few weeks.
look at your gardening skills! awesome!
Exciting! More time would sweeten the melon, yes. If I remember, there is supposed to be a way you can tell when it is ripe (and sweet) but I've forgotten what it is. And I am jealous, I admit, that you can garden. Someday...
You need to get some of those fertilizer pellets that make plants grow fast. They are only about 5 bucks or so at home depot.
If you have tomatoes on the vine when it gets too cold for them to ripen, pick them and bring them in. Put them on the counter; they'll ripen indoors -- perhaps without as much flavor as if they are vine-ripened, but still better than throwing them out. In northern climes bringing in tomatoes is the ONLY way they can eat home-grown tomatoes.
