The Graduate

Warning! This is a braggy post!
Last night was the graduation exercises for UT-Southwestern's medical school. As part of Helaman's oral and maxillofacial surgery residency, he was required to complete the classes and training required for a medical degree to have in addition to his dental degree. It also marks the midway point of the residency. In just three short years he will done with all his training and schooling - a total of 13 years!
Helaman with his OMFS co-residents and one of their attending surgeons.
All medical degree tassels and robes are green, to signify herbs and healing. The orange cloak is worn by all schools in the UT system. He was supposed to have worn purple as well to indicate his dental degree, but you will just have to imagine what that would have looked like. (yikes) Congratulations H!

Great Wolf

Helaman had some time off before going back to work, so we took a "stay-cation" to The Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, which is 20 minutes away. They have a huge indoor water park (no suntan lotion necessary!!) with slides, forts, play equipment, and one enormous bucket of water that dumps out on you.

Charlotte was tall enough for the big rides (with an adult) but didn't really want anything to do with them.
Both girls loved running up and down the hallways, which were largely vacant. We had the place to ourselves!
Several times a day was story time, which was an animated and live show teaching kids not to be afraid.
The lodge also had a "Cub" Club the girls enjoyed.
Aaooo!

Family Reunion 2011

This year's Broadbent Family Reunion was in Seguin, TX, right outside San Antonio. We stayed in a large lakehouse that was just big enough for everyone. The kids enjoyed goat feeding, jumping on beds, swimming and getting to know cousins. The adults enjoyed catching up, swimming, basketball, slideshows and quilting! Dad shot a video of that which no one will ever want to watch!

Olivia trying to find the bubbles her Aunt Amy just blew. Cousin James looks on.

Caribbean Cruise 2011

We had a wonderful time on our cruise! We set sail on March 27th out of Galveston port on Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas.
Our first stop was Cozumel, Mexico. We rented a jeep and drove around the whole island. We also went snorkeling. The tide was pretty strong!
Here we are at some "Mayan ruins".
The next stop was Georgetown, Grand Cayman. Here we rode horses 6 miles down the beach.
Then we just hung out on the beach for a while.
In Jamaica, the locals were pretty aggressive in trying to sell their wares. We took a tour around Falmouth.
Below is a view of Falmouth from the cruise boat's dining room.
On the boat, there was tons to do. We did some rock climbing...
Mini-golfing...
Ice skating...
Hanging around...
Roller blading...
And of course, eating!! Here we are on formal night. Each night they had great entertainment like comedians, singing and dancing, magician, and game shows. We were even participants on their version of "Family Feud". We played trivia many times but never won.
The food was fantastic, and we were able to make some friends since we ate with the same people each night.
Us with Susan, "Mama" (real name unknown), Kim and Kevin - who happen to live about 5 minutes away from us in Frisco.
Our waiter Soheil and his assistant Freddy were responsible for loading us up every night.
Charlotte and Olivia had a great time with Grandma and Grandpa, but were ready to get back home after a tiring week! I love how Olivia uses her cheek as a pillow.

Spring Break 2011

We really enjoyed our Spring Break(s) this year! First, we hit up Frank Buck zoo in Gainesville about an hour away. A couple years ago we visited this zoo and loved it for its manageable size and deserted feel. This time it was very crowded (due our attendance on $2 admission day during Spring Break) but it was still fun.

I think the girls had an even better time later that week on a mall trip though...

Olivia couldn't get enough of the firetruck.

Before leaving for a week with Grandma, we decided to chop off Charlotte's lengthy mane for her second haircut ever. I thought she would be nervous, but she was determined to get a haircut like some of her friends had recently done. She loved every second of her salon experience and didn't stop talking about it for a while.
Olivia thought she was getting a haircut, too.
Um.... is someone going to shampoo me or what?

Happy Birthday Charlotte!

We drove down to Houston the day before Charlotte's birthday. She was very excited to be able to spend her birthday with her Grandparents there and has talked about it for months! I wanted to make it a special time, since we didn't have a big party this year. So the night before, Helaman and I stayed up late making her a memorable cake that turned out to be a little harder than I thought it would be!

I think she liked it though! She got some more play food, a Barbie car, and a backpack for preschool next year.
Best of all, she got a 8 day, 7 night all inclusive stay at Grandma B's. She is already plotting her return... I can't believe how fast she is growing up. We love you Charlotte!

so it goes

We have loved our early spring! Walking to the park has been a daily outing, and these girls love to swing and slide. They are starting to have a lot of fun playing together, which is a pleasure to see!
Olivia is a big cuddler. She loves climbing up on laps, and it is so fun to squeeze her.
When she started popping out of her 18 and 24 month clothes, I went through all of Charlotte's old clothes and found several cute outfits that fit her great - mainly those that Charlotte wore last summer.

We also enjoy going to the library. I love this picture, due to her deep concentration, completely unaware of how hilarious the hat is.
Helaman is finishing up the last of his med school requirements before graduation in May. He is enjoying the stake basketball tournament, March Madness brackets, and following the up and down b-ball saga of his alma mater-in-law, BYU. His spring break is coming up at the end of the month, and we are celebrating by going on a Caribbean cruise! We are looking forward to it, almost as much as Charlotte is looking forward to spending time with her Grandma (she has mentioned it about twice a day for a month).

I am doing my usual stuff - finding deals, attending playgroups, training Olivia to walk, making smoothies and eating out. I have also become the unlikely head of a passionate but slightly uncommitted opposition force to the neighborhood HOA's shocking new assessment fine associated with building a redundant and useless clubhouse. The worst deal ever. Good times!
